Product Description

From the Manufacturer
Engineered with pro-level features and performance, the 12.3-effective-megapixel D300 combines brand new technologies with advanced features inherited from Nikon’s newly announced D3 professional digital SLR camera to offer serious photographers remarkable performance and agility.

Similar to the D3, the D300 features Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera’s new features. The D300 features a new 51-point autofocus system with Nikon’s 3D Focus Tracking feature and two new LiveView shooting modes that allow users to frame a photograph using the camera’s high-resolution LCD monitor. The D300 shares a similar Scene Recognition System as is found in the D3; it promises to greatly enhance the accuracy of autofocus, autoexposure, and auto white balance by recognizing the subject or scene being photographed and applying this information to the calculations for the three functions.

The D300 reacts with lightning speed, powering up in a mere 0.13 seconds and shooting with an imperceptible 45-millisecond shutter release lag time. The D300 is capable of shooting at a rapid six frames per second and can go as fast as eight frames per second when using the optional MB-D10 multi-power battery pack. In continuous bursts, the D300 can shoot up to 100 shots at full 12.3-megapixel resolution. (NORMAL-LARGE image setting, using a SanDisk Extreme IV 1GB CompactFlash card.)

The D300 incorporates a range of innovative technologies and features that will significantly improve the accuracy, control, and performance photographers can get from their equipment. Its new Scene Recognition System advances the use of Nikon’s acclaimed 1,005-segment sensor to recognize colors and light patterns that help the camera determine the subject and the type of scene being photographed before a picture is taken. This information is used to improve the accuracy of autofocus, autoexposure, and auto white balance functions in the D300. For example, the camera can track moving subjects better and by identifying them, it can also automatically select focus points faster and with greater accuracy. It can also analyze highlights and more accurately determine exposure, as well as infer light sources to deliver more accurate white balance detection.

The D300 incorporates Nikon’s new Multi-CAM 3500DX autofocus module that features an intelligent array of 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors. These sensors can either be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either nine, 21, or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D tracking with automatic focus-point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses color and light information to accurately track the subject. Nikon’s new Scene Recognition System and improved focus algorithms also contribute to the impressive performance of the new 51-point AF system.

Nikon’s new Picture Control System makes it easy for users of all experience levels to select and apply adjustments to how their pictures are rendered and create optimized settings to suit their individual preferences. The same settings produce consistent picture tone, even when using different camera bodies. The Picture Control System offers four basic setting options–Standard, Neutral, Vivid, and Monochrome. These can be directly modified for easy adjustment and customization of image parameters, such as sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, and saturation. Photographers can customize and store up to nine customized options in the D300 and export up to 99 to a CF memory card, enabling photographers to share settings among multiple cameras that feature Picture Control System.

Taking a cue from the popularity of Nikon’s D-Lighting technology, the D300 features a new Active D-Lighting mode that, when enabled, provides remarkable real-time highlight and shadow correction with optimized image contrast. Active D-Lighting produces broader tone reproduction in both shadows and highlights by controlling highlights and exposure compensation while applying localized tone control technology to achieve a more pleasing level of contrast across the entire image. And because the advantages of Active D-Lighting are applied as images are captured, image editing time can be shortened.

The D300’s LiveView feature offers two modes for confirming subjects and composition on the new 920,000-dot, high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor while shooting. The Tripod mode is designed for precise focus and accuracy when the camera is on a stable platform and the subject is not moving. In this mode, the camera focuses on the subject using focal-plane contrast and any point on the LCD screen can be selected as the focus point for the picture. The second mode, called Handheld mode, allows photographers to use the camera’s conventional TTL focusing system with all 51-points and 15 cross-type points available. When using this mode, the camera activates focusing immediately when the shutter button is pressed to ensure accurate focus.

The D300 also employs a new self-cleaning sensor unit. Four different resonance frequencies vibrate the optical low-pass filter in front of the image sensor to shake particles free and reduce the appearance of dust.

Refined Ergonomics and Usability
The D300 inherits one of Nikon’s most streamlined, functional, and aesthetically pleasing layouts in a digital SLR camera, designed to enable photographers to take pictures with less fatigue, greater accuracy, and comfort. The camera’s viewfinder provides virtually 100 percent coverage so pictures can be framed accurately, while an ultra-high definition 920,000 dot VGA LCD screen on the rear of the camera displays images with vivid color and clarity. Its 170-degree wide viewing angle makes it easy to compose shots using the LCD screen in LiveView mode.

The D300 features rugged magnesium alloy construction and the camera’s shutter mechanism is tested up to 150,000 cycles. The 3.0-inch LCD is strengthened with tempered glass and the D300’s rubber gaskets and seals protect vulnerable entry points from dust and moisture.

18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
The lens included with this kit offers a broad 18-200mm focal range for use in a variety of situations. It is equivalent to a 27-300 lens in the 35mm format. Its VR II system offers the equivalent of using a shutter speed 4 stops faster. Two ED glass and three aspherical lens elements minimize chromatic aberration, astigmatism, and other forms of distortion while ensuring high resolution and contrast. It employs a seven-blade rounded diaphragm opening that achieves a natural blur for out-of-focus elements, and it can focus from as close as 50 centimeters (20 inches) from the subject through its entire focal range.

The lens also incorporates a SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast, quiet focusing, an M/A mode for rapid switching between autofocus and manual focus operation, and an internal focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing improved balance. The Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superb color reproduction while minimizing ghosting and flare, and the included flower-shaped lens hood HB-35 (provided) greatly reduces stray light.

Product Description

Amazon.com
The new D700 digital SLR camera featuring a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor that measures 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. Benefiting from Nikon’s legacy of imaging technology innovation, the D700 offers both advanced and professional photographers stunning image quality, accurate color reproduction and revolutionary low light performance.

Building on the immense success of the Nikon D3 professional D-SLR camera, the D700 offers pro-level performance and an extensive array of features and innovations in a comfortably nimble platform. In addition to the Nikon-original FX-format CMOS sensor, the D700 incorporates Nikon’s EXPEED Image Processing System, Nikon’s renowned 51-point auto focus system with 3D Focus Tracking and two Live View shooting modes that allow photographers to frame a shot using the camera’s three-inch high-resolution LCD monitor. The D700 also features Nikon’s sophisticated Scene Recognition System and a new active dust reduction system.

Nikon’s flagship FX and DX-format cameras, the D3 and D300 respectively, established new benchmarks for digital image quality, speed, and unmatched ISO performance. The D700 maintains this new measure with exceptional overall image quality, broad tonal range and depth, and extremely low noise throughout its native ISO range of 200 to 6400.

Nikon D700 Digital SLR Highlights

The legendary Nikon FX-Format CMOS sensor The D700’s 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS image sensor provides exceptional image quality throughout its remarkable ISO sensitivity range. A large pixel size of 8.45 µm allows for an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio and a wide dynamic range. The 12-channel readout enables accelerated information transfer, allowing the D700 to shoot at speeds of up to eight frames per second at full resolution (using the optional MB-D10 Multi Power Battery Pack) and quickly write image data onto the CompactFlash card.

The D700 offers a versatile base ISO range from 200-6400 but can be expanded to range from ISO 100 (Lo-1) to 25,600 (Hi-2) affording photographers the new-found confidence to shoot in the widest variety of lighting conditions from the brightest midday sun to dim interiors. Images previously thought to be impossible to create without complex lighting set-ups or lengthy post-processing are now captured easily and faithfully with the D700, unleashing new and diverse shooting possibilities.

Also new to the D700 is Nikon’s first self-cleaning system designed for the FX-format sensor. Utilizing four distinct vibration frequencies, the D700 frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor’s optical low-pass filter at start-up, shut-down or on demand. As an added benefit, the mirror box and entire shutter mechanism are constructed of materials that resist creating debris that can affect image purity.

Fastest speed and autofocus in its class The D700 starts up in a mere 0.12 seconds and has a nearly imperceptible shutter-lag response time of 0.40 milliseconds, making this an extraordinarily responsive tool for the demanding photographer. The D700 can record full-resolution JPEG images at an astounding five frames per second (fps), or eight fps with the optional MB-D10 battery pack for up to 100 images, or up to 17 lossless 14-bit Nikon NEF (RAW) files. To write images efficiently, the Nikon D700 is also compliant with the next-generation of high-speed UDMA CompactFlash cards that will enable recording speeds up to 35 megabytes/second.

The D700 offers one of the fastest and most accurate advanced AF systems on the market today. Nikon’s Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module features 51 AF points and the ability to use 3D tracking to focus and lock-on a moving subject. The 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors can be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single Area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either 9, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D Focus Tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses scene color content and light information to accurately track the subject.

Intelligent features for sophisticated performance The D700 relies on a wealth of innovative Nikon technologies to help photographers create superb images. Nikon’s Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. The Scene Recognition System also assists autofocus by tracking subject position and automatically shifts the AF points used to match the subject’s movement within the frame. This system also contributes to higher accuracy of auto exposure and auto white balance detection, resulting in sharp landscapes, flattering portraits and engaging action shots.

Photographers also have the option to enhance their pictures during or after capture with the Picture Control System and Active D-Lighting. Nikon’s Picture Control System enables users to adjust their images to pre-set parameters such as Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome that apply tweaks to image sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, overall tone and saturation. D-Lighting uses localized tone control technology to further optimize highlight and shadow detail while also maintaining natural contrast, giving photographers the ability to capture more perfectly exposed images, even in unusual lighting conditions. Active D-Lighting lets photographers choose from various intensities during capture, while a new Automatic mode also applies varying levels of D-Lighting as, and when needed, to enhance photos while shooting.

Enhanced Live View modes and viewfinder Ideal for studio, remote applications and more, Nikon’s Live View allows the photographer to compose the subject on the bright three-inch, TFT LCD monitor. In Handheld mode, the user is able to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting; familiar TTL phase-detection AF is activated, using all 51 AF points. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects and tripod stabilization. It enables focal-plane contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a specific area. Remote view, focusing and shooting can also be controlled from a PC (via connection or wireless) using the optional Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 software. Additionally, the Virtual Horizon feature on the D700 can now be superimposed over the Live View monitor image to aid composition.

While using Live View to compose or review images and settings, users will appreciate the ultra-high resolution 920,000-dot VGA, three-inch TFT LCD monitor with tempered glass that provides a wide 170-degree viewing angle. The large monitor is remarkably effective when confirming the focus with enlarged playback images. The camera also outputs a video signal to an HD television using the new smaller HDMI-C standard, which is an excellent solution for workshop demonstrations or shooting tethered for clients.

Photographers will also be able to compose images easily using the wide and bright viewfinder that features an eye-level pentaprism with high refraction index and provides a 95-percent frame coverage with 0.72x magnification. Each of the 51 AF points, as well as a framing grid, can also be superimposed on the finder screen to suit the photographer’s personal preferences.

Rugged construction and durability High-strength magnesium alloy is used for the construction of the camera body, rear body and mirror box to create a precision platform, reduce weight and provide rugged durability. The camera is tested to stand up to the rigors of the globetrotting photographer and is weather sealed using precision O-rings where connections are made to effectively combat dust and moisture.

The shutter unit employs an assembly made of a new composite carbon fiber and Kevlar hybrid material. Tested on fully assembled cameras, the D700’s shutter unit has been proven through 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The self-diagnostic shutter constantly monitors and maintains shutter precision to ensure peak performance.

Product Description

From the Manufacturer
Designed to be used by photographers of any skill level, the E500’s compact, durable body is packed with Olympus innovations like the exclusive Dust Reduction System for spot-free photos, 8 million pixels of detail for bright and colorful images, a TruePic Turbo Image Processor for fast response time, and an easy-to-view 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD.Exclusive Dust Free Technology for Spot-Free Photos
Dust is all around us, and when swapping out a lens on a digital single-lens reflex camera there’s a chance that a camera’s electro-statically charged image sensor will attract micro dust that can ruin photos. Olympus’s Dust Reduction System produces spot-free photos with the exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter, a patented ultrasonic technology that shakes at 35,000 vibrations a second to remove dust from in front of the camera sensor every time you turn the camera on.

Detailed, Bright, and Colorful Photos with 8-Megapixel Image Sensor
The E500 is loaded with an impressive 8 million pixels of detail, for bright colorful photos. The image sensor in the Evolt E500 is a high-performance Full Frame Transfer Kodak KAF-8300CE CCD that delivers improved dynamic range, low noise to capture fine image details in the highlight and shadow areas, as well as excellent color fidelity for brilliant colors.

TruePic Turbo for Clarity and Speed
Olympus’s TruePic Turbo Image Processor provides fast camera response, operation, and processing speed for more responsive camera operation. For faster burst rates, the TruePic Turbo processor addresses the dedicated 64 MB image buffer for up to four TIFF or RAW images at 2.5 frames per second, and unlimited burst mode with HQ JPEG images and extreme-speed Compact Flash cards.

Large, Easy-to-View 2.5-Inch HyperCyrstal LCD Monitor
Big and bright with 215,250 pixels, the E500 has a 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD that offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors, so captured images can be beautifully displayed in vivid color on the screen with exceptional clarity. Because photos are for sharing, the E500 LCD features a wide, 160-degree viewing angle on the vertical and horizontal axis, ensuring excellent visibility and beautiful image quality even when everyone huddles around the camera to see what you’ve created.

The World’s Largest Selection of Digital Specific Lenses
The versatility of the Olympus E-System comes from delivering the largest selection of “Designed-for-Digital” lenses–more than any other manufacturer to date. Olympus’s Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses come in a wide range of focal lengths for achieving the best image result, and impress with their spectacular clarity and edge-to-edge sharpness.

Most other digital SLR cameras still use many traditional 35mm film lenses on digital bodies. But since those lenses are based on designs for film and not for pixels, they deliver insufficient light at the edges of a digital camera’s image sensor. This can result in reduced sharpness and color definition, particularly when shooting with large apertures and wide-angle lenses. The E500 does not have this problem, because it accommodates the full line of interchangeable Zuiko Digital Lenses, which are designed for digital capture with smart technology that allows the lenses to communicate with the camera to ensure the best possible image quality.

Olympus dedicated digital optics coupled with the Evolt E500 render sharpness and contrast more consistently at any given f-stop. The lenses are matched to the Four Thirds System standard image sensor for the optimal balance between image quality, camera, and lens size, and expandability. With a wide array of digital specific lenses to choose from, it’s easy to select the ideal lens to bring along when you don’t want to lug a lot of heavy, bulky gear.

The E500 outfit includes a Zuiko digital 14-45mm f3.5-f5.6 lens (equivalent to 28mm-90mm in 35mm photography) that perfectly matches the imager so light strikes the sensor directly to ensure rich, accurate colors and edge-to-edge sharpness. Its 3.2x zoom covers the range most frequently used in ordinary photography and weighs just 10 ounces (285 grams) offering users an extremely dynamic, portable everyday-use zoom. Close-ups as near as 15 inches (38 centimeters) are possible throughout the zoom range. It also comes with a 40-150mm f3.5-4.5 Zuiko lens.

Easy-to-Use, Easy-to-Handle Light and Ergonomic Design
Creating an affordable digital SLR that most anyone can pick up and start to use is about making it easier to operate. That means menus that make sense and buttons on the body that are easy to understand and operate; adding automatic settings for every imaginable situation; making the LCD big and bright enough so you can review a shot without squinting; and making it less of a chore to get images out of the camera and into your computer or printer. Moreover, at just 5.09 x 3.72 x 2.59 inches (W x H x D) and only 15.3 ounces, the Evolt E500 is light and compact enough to comfortably shoot with all day.

You don’t need a degree in photography to shoot like a pro with the E500. Just take it home, charge the Li-ion battery with the included charger, and begin taking photos. Select from one of the camera’s 25 Exposure Modes (Easy, Basic, and Creative) that make it easy to get the results you want, whenever and wherever you want them.

To access the Easy Modes, simply turn the mode dial on the top of the camera to “Scene” and choose from a range of 15 pre-programmed Scene Select modes to achieve the optimal results for Night Scenes, Children, and more.

Every Scene Select mode on the Evolt E500 provides a sample image and a description of what is happening to achieve the desired result. For example, choosing the Landscape setting reveals a sample of a landscape photo, and a text description of what the mode is displayed on the large, easy-to-read 2.5-inch LCD.

The Flexibility of the Most Feature Rich Camera in its Class
Once one feature is mastered, there are a seemingly endless number of other features just waiting to be explored. Because the E500 is designed for the ultimate user-friendly experience, you can choose to let the camera make all the decisions, or take control for a new level of customization and performance.

  • 5 Metering Modes: A new 49-Point Digital ESP Light Meter enables digital electro selective pattern metering for accurate exposures under the largest number of conditions. The Digital ESP can also be linked to the AF (autofocus) selection or independent of the AF selection for even more versatility. Olympus’s widely acclaimed proprietary Digital ESP metering calculates the best light values under complex lighting conditions. Center-weighted metering is biased to the center of the viewfinder (cross) area. Spot Meter (2%) enables the most accurate metering for tough lighting conditions like backlit or spot lit. Highlight Spot Meter (2%) adjusts for predominantly white subject for correct exposure with detail. Shadow Spot Meter (2%) adjusts for a black subject, providing the correct exposure with detail.
  • 3 Color Modes: Vivid/Natural/Muted: Vivid mode produces photos with more highly saturated colors and higher contrast to optimize images when vivid shots are required. The Natural mode produces realistic color similar to those seen by the human eye and is the perfect choice for the discerning photographer looking for the most realistic photos. The Muted mode is ideal for those users who plan to heavily manipulate or edit their images with the included Olympus Master Software or with Adobe Photoshop.
  • A Choice of Two Color Space Settings: Users can choose from two color space settings according to their needs: sRGB, which is the standard for computer monitor viewing and inkjet printer output, and Adobe RGB, which is widely used for commercial applications.
  • 9 Black and White Modes: Red, Yellow, Orange, and Green filters can be selected to replicate the same traditional film filters, enhancing the drama of the image in the Black and White shooting mode. In addition to Sepia tone, the Evolt E500 also offers users three tone effects: Blue, Green, and Purple for special results.
  • Dual Card Slots: Users also benefit from two memory card slots–one for CompactFlash or Microdrive and one for xD-Picture Cards. Simply depress a button on the back of the camera to choose which card type to capture and copy images back and forth from one card to the other in playback.
  • Support for High-Speed and High-Capacity Memory Media: The Evolt E500 supports 32-bit file formatting allowing the use of 2 gigabyte and larger CF, Microdrive, and xD media cards. The Evolt E500 also supports high-speed CF cards for faster operation in the burst mode.
  • Simultaneous RAW and JPEG Image Recording: A choice of three image formats is offered: RAW, TIFF, and JPEG. If desired, image data can be simultaneously recorded in RAW and JPEG with the RAW+JPEG format.
  • Contrast, Sharpness, and Tone Curve Controls: Contrast can be set to any of five levels, and sharpness can be set to any of seven levels. So whether you want pro-quality tonal fidelity or sharp vibrant colors, you can customize each image to suit their preference.
  • White Balance: White balance settings from 3,000K to 7,000K can be set in 12 steps using button and dial controls, with +/- 7-step fine-tuning available for all settings. From the Manufacturer

Nikon is proud to announce the new 24.5-megapixel FX-format (35.9 x 24.0mm) D3X digital SLR camera! Joining the award-winning 12.1-megapixel D3, the D3X brings extreme resolution performance to Nikon professional flagship-level D-SLRs. The D3X was meticulously engineered for professional photographers whose assignments demand nothing less than the ability to capture extreme fidelity, detail and nuance in ways now made possible with the amazing D3X.

Nikon Extreme Digital SLR Image Quality
In the studio or on location, the D3X faithfully captures NEF (RAW) files that, when processed, are approximately 138 MB! Of course, neither a Nikon 24.5-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor nor 138 MB files are of value unless they deliver truly superior image quality. And in this regard, the new D3X exceeds expectations. Like its 12.1-megapixel D3 counterpart, the D3X features Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image processing technologies teamed with the proprietary Nikon Scene Recognition System to ensure the utmost in image fidelity, low noise, faster, more accurate autofocus and amazing file processing speed that makes continuous shooting at up to five frames per second possible. In addition, the D3X’s ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 1600 (with Lo1, 50 and Hi 2 up to 6400) is mindful of the needs of photographers specializing in commercial, fashion and fine art photography.

Nikon Professional D-SLR System Synergy
Nikon engineers understand that the needs of professional photographers vary with their assignments. Nikon also understands that a photographer’s workflow can be seriously impacted by cameras with widely dissimilar handling, which is why the D3X takes its design cues from the enormously successful D3. Logical and familiar control layout integrates with rugged, reliable construction. And like the D3, the D3X features Nikon’s 51-point AF system with 3D focus tracking. A bright 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot LCD monitor offers precise image review, along with razorsharp, 27x magnification for fast, critical confirmation of focus in one of two Live View modes, all of which contribute to the D3X’s professional potency.

ETFs for Every Investor!

Ron Rowland

In last week’s Money and Markets column, I told you about the advantages exchange-traded funds have over mutual funds. Today we’ll go a little deeper and look at the many exciting ways you can execute your investment ideas with ETFs.

As you’ll see, practically all the new financial innovation is happening in the ETF niche. Mutual fund sponsors have all but given up on doing anything new and different.

The first thing I want you to understand is that an ETF is nothing more than a tool. And most of the time, ETFs do what they’re designed to do. The more important question is which ETF is a match for your goals and situation? The ETF that works for your neighbor might not be the same one that you need.

Adding ETFs to your toolbox is a terrific way to implement your investment strategy.
Adding ETFs to your toolbox is a terrific way to implement your investment strategy.

So what are your goals? If you have a well-designed investment strategy, you’ll still need good tools to execute that strategy. And ETFs are a great way to fill up your toolbox.

Just look at some of the ways ETFs allow you to invest …

Market Benchmarks: If you’re a broad-minded investor who wants to play the whole market, you can easily do it with ETFs. The iShares MSCI ACWI Index Fund (ACWI) tracks the MSCI All-Country World Index — which includes just about every stock market in the world: U.S., Europe, Asia, Emerging Markets, 46 countries in all. ACWI is one-stop shopping for equity investors.

Style Investing: Do you think small-caps will outperform? Consider iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), which lets you buy all 2,000 stocks in this popular index with one, quick transaction. Or if you’re looking to tilt your portfolio toward value stocks, or growth stocks, or dividend-paying stocks, you have plenty of ETFs to choose from.

Sector ETFs: These are some of my favorites. You know that different industries tend to rotate in and out of favor: Technology, health care, retailers, utilities, and more. ETFs let you own the hot sectors and also give you a way to zero in on the best sub-sectors. Within the technology sector, for instance, there are ETFs that cover semiconductors, computer hardware, software, information services, networking, telecommunications and more.

International: For years investors had to use mutual funds in order to invest outside the U.S. Fund sponsors covered broad regions, but to get any more precise you had to buy individual stocks. Not any longer. ETFs now cover not only the major regions of the world — Europe, Asia/Pacific, Latin America and so on — but also many individual countries. Whether you want to buy Singapore, Switzerland, or South Africa … ETFs let you do it. Try that with a mutual fund!

International ETFs will let you invest in booming individual countries, such as Singapore.
International ETFs will let you invest in booming individual countries, such as Singapore.

Fixed Income: Are you a bond investor? ETFs don’t leave you out. You’ll find ETFs covering the U.S. Treasury market at all maturity levels, from short-term bills out to the long-term bonds, and even “laddered” maturities. You can also use ETFs to trade high-yield or “junk” bonds, investment-grade corporate bonds, international bonds, emerging market bonds, municipal bonds, and more.

Real Estate: This asset class hasn’t been so attractive lately, but its day will come again. When it does, you can use ETFs to participate in commercial real estate … housing … industrial properties … international real estate … and more! Unlike buying your own properties, with real estate ETFs you won’t have maintenance headaches and you won’t have to chase after deadbeat tenants. You also won’t have to pay a realty agent a six percent commission when it’s time to sell.

Commodity ETFs: Have you ever wanted to speculate in grains, crude oil or other commodities but didn’t like the idea of trading futures? Now there’s another way: Commodity-based ETFs and exchange-traded notes (ETNs) give you access to many natural resource markets. And unlike futures, with ETFs and ETNs you can never lose more than you invest.

There are even ETFs that give you the opportunity to diversify into other world currencies.
There are even ETFs that give you the opportunity to diversify into other world currencies.

Foreign Currencies: If you’re convinced that our soaring national debt is going to turn the U.S. dollar into dust, you don’t have to sit still and take it. With ETFs you can easily diversify into other world currencies: Everything from the euro and Japanese yen to more obscure (but sometimes very strong) currencies like the Australian dollar, Danish krone and the Chinese yuan.

The Latest:
Inverse and Leveraged ETFs

Like I said, ETF developers are brimming over with exciting, new ideas. One of the latest is inverse ETFs. As you know, almost all ETFs track an index of some kind. If the index goes up, the ETF goes up, too. Likewise, if the index falls, the ETF that tracks it will lose value.

Inverse ETFs are like regular ETFs in reverse. An inverse ETF is designed to go up as its index goes down, and down when the index goes up. So now you can use ETFs to profit from a falling market! Sure, this has always been possible with options, futures, and short-selling, but inverse ETFs make the process so much easier.

Leveraged ETFs are amplified versions of regular ETFs. They come in different strengths — 2X and 3X are now available. A 2X ETF is meant to deliver twice the daily return of its index. For instance, ProShares Ultra S&P 500 (SSO) tracks the S&P 500 Index. On a day when the S&P 500 goes up two percent, SSO should be up about four percent. Sweet!

Put these two ETFs together and what do you get? Leveraged Inverse ETFs. Now you can bet on a falling market and magnify your gains if you’re right.

For instance, suppose you think the emerging markets are ready to fall. You could buy Direxion Daily Emerging Markets Bear 3X Shares (EDZ), which have 3X daily leverage. This means if the MSCI Emerging Markets Index falls five percent in a day — which is not really so unusual for emerging markets — EDZ should be up approximately 15 percent!

Of course, you have to be nimble to trade these ETFs. If you’re wrong, leverage will boost your losses just as fast as it adds to your gains! The point is that these are tools you didn’t have five years ago. Now you can join the same game hedge funds and large institutions have been playing for years.

Today, ETFs give you a world of new ways to make money. It’s up to you to educate yourself and grab these opportunities, and I’ll continue to help you on both counts right here every week.

Best wishes,

Ron

My husband absolutely loves his dump bucket. He says it works perfectly. You might want to use it with a bigger winch than a 2500lb one. He has moved approx 20 ton of gravel with his in just one weekend.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you have a need for it, buy it!, November 22, 2005
By Edmond E. Hellums “Gene” (Oxford, MS)
(REAL NAME)
First of all, its a great product. Definately a time saver and a great value, especially for the Amazon discount price.

Now, it’s not perfect, which is why I gave it 4 stars. Granted, the shortcomings are mostly related to the model ATV you are using.

Amazon advertises 1-2 week shipping, it may take longer. There was a snafu with my first shipment, and it was never shipped. It had to go through the reorder process. 5 weeks later I had my bucket. Amazon did upgrade the 2nd shipment to 2nd day FedEx. But that is Amazon, not the product, and not why I gave it a less than perfect rating.

The universal mount that is ordered seperately, does not come with the mounting brackets for the Bombardier Outlander. You have to order them directly from Swisher for about $50 bucks. You may have to convince the customer service rep that she can acutally sell this item directly to you but that is another story.

If you have a Traxter, you will need an additional extender bar for the universal mount. If in doubt, call swisher, and get more details about your ATV.

Once I had the parts I needed, installation went smoothly. The front leaf springs are in two pieces and attached to the main frame running the lenght of the ATV. The springs are squeezed to bracket between two plates. I had concern these springs w ould slip, and they did during use. The bucket also slanted to one side about 2-3 inches. I did get 4 hours of use out of it though. I brought the ATV back into the shop and jacked up the mounting bracket after loosening the spring plates. Once the bracket was to an almost level position, I tack welded the springs together and re-tightened. Still a slant in the bucket, so I loosened one more time, shimmed one side and retightened. Now it is straight, secure and performing beautifully. I have had to adjust the spring mechanism on the drop arm, it doesn’t always want to re-grab the bucket at times.

Anyway, this has been my experience, I would order this product if I had to do it over again. It definately beats a shovel and wheelbarrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the Amazon Discount price!, August 2, 2005

This is a heavy duty piece of equipment that can take whatever you throw at it. Its large capacity is great for all back yard landscaping projects. Amazons price is $100.00 lower then all other sites on the internet and the super saver shipping cost keeps the overall cost well within reach. Definitly recommended.
